Reappropriating Museum Collections: Performing Geology Specimens and Meterology Data as New Instruments for Musical Expression

چکیده
In this paper we describe an artistic response to a collection of natural history museum artefacts, developed as part of a residency with an arts organisation. Drawing on a critical literature in studies of material culture, the work incorporated data sonification, image audification, field recordings and created a number of instruments for exploring geological artefacts and meterological data as aesthetic material. The residency culminated in an exhibition presented as a ‘sensorium’ for the sensory exploration of museum objects. In describing the methods and thinking behind the project this paper presents an alternative approach to engaging artists and audiences with local heritage and museum archives, which draws on research in NIME and allied literatures, and which is devoted to enlivening collections as occasions for varied interpretation, appropriation and aesthetic response.

متن کاملWhy Always Versatile?: Dynamically Customizable Musical Instruments Facilitate Expressive Performances
In this paper, we discuss a design principle for the musical instruments that are useful for both novices and professional musicians and that facilitate musically rich expression. We believe that the versatility of conventional musical instruments causes difficulty in performance. By dynamically specializing a musical instrument for performing a specific (genre of) piece, the musical instrument...
متن کاملFT-Raman and FT-Infrared investigations of archaeological artefacts from Foeni Neolithic site (Banat, Romania)
An impressive collection of chert artefacts from the Foeni Neolithic archaeological site (Timiş County, Banat region, Romania) is hosted by the Banat Museum in Timişoara. A representative set of seven specimens was non-destructively investigated using FT-Raman and ATR-FT-IR spectroscopy. The research was carried out for checking if these readily available, non-destructive, fast, and cheap metho...
متن کاملArtefacts, biology and bias in museum collection research.
Museum collections are increasingly subjected to scientific scrutiny, including molecular, isotopic and trace-element analyses. Recent advances have extended analyses from natural history specimens to historical artefacts. We highlight three areas of concern that can influence interpretation of data derived from museum collections: sampling issues associated with museum collection use, methods ...

Herbaria and natural history collections (NHC) are critical to the practice of taxonomy and have potential to serve as sources of data for biodiversity and conservation. They are the repositories of vital reference specimens, enabling species to be studied and their distribution in space and time to be documented and analysed, as well as enabling the development of hypotheses about species rela...
